In Wrightsville Beach, N.C., I embarked on perhaps my greatest adventure in journalism, where for three years I owned and operated the town’s weekly newspaper, the Lumina News. From 2017-2020, I took on the role of newspaper publisher, adding new skills and experiences to my journalism background.
I began work at the Lumina News in 2015 as the newspaper’s news director, where I produced several reports each week, while also overseeing three reporters, as well as interns. In this role, I generated a full spectrum of content, from news writing to editing to photography to social media posts. As a result of my efforts, my work was recognized by the North Carolina Press Association, including in 2016 a first-place award for online breaking news coverage and a second-place award for best multimedia project.
In 2017, I assumed the role of publisher, adding a host of new duties, responsibilities and challenges. I navigated the newspaper through Hurricane Florence in 2018, when the town was evacuated for more than a week due to the storm. Though I was unable to keep the newspaper operating due to a deteriorating environment for print media, the experience greatly expanded my knowledge of the publishing industry and gave me a keener insight into the field of journalism.
